What is SSC CHSL?
Every year, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) administers a Combined Higher Level Secondary Level Exam for recruitment across Ministries/Departments of the Indian Government. The Staff Selection Commission administers the exam to hire for the following positions:
- Postal assistants
- Sorting assistants
- Lower Divisional Clerk
- Court Clerk
Approximately 30 Lakh candidates take part in the SSC CHSL exam each year. The Central Government hires at least 2 Lakh. The SSC CHSL exam is held in March (Tier 1) or June (Tier 2 exam). The online exam is conducted in three stages.
The first stage is online-based, while the second and third are offline-based. Important changes to the CHSL Exam Pattern or CHSL Exam Syllabus are important. This is what will determine your success in the exam.
The SSC CHSL Tier 1 exam will consist of the following sections:
- General Intelligence,

To fulfill the CHSL Eligibility Criteria, the candidate must be an Indian citizen. The candidate must be between 18 and 27 years old as of January 2019 and have passed 12th grade or an equivalent examination from a recognized Board/University.
The SSC CHSL application procedure for the next session will begin in November or December. The application fee is INR 100 and is waived for female candidates, SC/ST candidates, physically disabled candidates, and veteran candidates.
The SSC CHSL Cutoff is a mandatory score to be selected for further consideration. The cutoff marks for general candidates are higher than those of the SC, ST, and OPH categories. The SSC CHSL Result will be uploaded to the website in PDF Format. Candidates would need to search for their name or roll number on the site.
The Tier-3 exam results will be made public once they are complete. The final posts will be declared, and the candidates will be appointed.
Within 10-15 days after the exam, the Staff Selection Commission releases the SSC CHSL Answer Key. Examiners can use the answer key to determine their marks and ranks during the exam.

2019 Educational Qualification
- To be eligible for SSC CHSL 2019-20, aspirants must have the following minimum education qualifications:
- LDC/ JSA/ PA/ SA, DEO (except DEOs within C&AG): Candidates must have passed the 12th Standard examination or an equivalent exam from a recognized Board/University.
- For DEO i.e. data entry operator, candidates would have been passing a minimum 12th std.
SSC CHSL Age Limit 2019
The age limit is a major eligibility requirement for SSC applicants. Candidates must ensure that they meet the age limit by January 2020. SSC CHSL candidates must be aged between 18 and 27 years. The age limit for the positions is 18-27 as of 01/01/2020 (i.e., Candidates must be born no earlier than 02-01-1993 and no later than 01-01-2002.

Selection Process 2019

Important Points for SSC CHSL Exam Pattern
- Candidates will be shortlisted for Tier-II Examination based on their Tier-I Examination performance. The final selection will be based on all candidates’ average scores.
- Tier-I will have Tier-I and Tier-II cutoffs that are category-specific for different positions, i.e., (i) DEO; (ii] DEO Grade A’; and (iii] LDC/ JSA and PA/ SA.
- Candidates will be shortlisted for Tier-III Examination based on their Tier-I+ Tier-II performance, provided that they have scored at least 33% in Tier-II Examination. Tier-III Examination has a qualifying nature.
- All qualified candidates must pass the Tier-III Skill Test for DEOs.
- All candidates must take the Typing Test in Tier III for posts other than DEOs, except those exempted.
- Final selection of the Ministries/Departments/Offices for Tier-III qualified candidates will be based on their performance in Tier-I+Tier II Examinations and their preference of Posts/Departments when they are verified.
- The Commission will shortlist candidates and recommend them for appointment based on their Paper – I & II total marks and preference for the positions.
SSC CHSL Exam Pattern 2019
- Online mode will be used for the SSC CHSL 2019 Tier 1 examination.
- A descriptive piece of 100 marks is introduced in pen and paper mode in 60 minutes.
- Reduced time limit to examine Tier -I, from 75 minutes down to 60 minutes
- Tier III will not change.
- There is no sectional cut.
SSC CHSL Syllabus
We must address each level separately because the SSC CHSL consists of three levels. This online objective exam will be administered. The Tier 1 exam at SSC CHSL 2019 has four sections, with 100 questions total of 200 marks. Below are the subject-specific details:

SSC CHSL Tier 2 Syllabus
This descriptive exam is intended to assess the written skills of candidates in English/Hindi. The Paper would consist of a 200-250 word essay and a letter/application of 150-200 words.
Tier II’s minimum qualifying marks would be 33%. For the preparation of merit, Tier II performance would be considered. Reading various articles from different newspapers is the best way to prepare. You should also be familiar with the format of the Letter and Application.
- The exam lasts 60 minutes and is worth 100 marks.
- These questions are based on the Class 10 level.
- The exam is qualifying.
- No evaluation of Part papers written in Hindi or Part in English.
- Candidates who are visually impaired or have cerebral palsy will need to take the exam for 80 minutes.
SSC CHSL Tier 3 Exam Syllabus
Tier 3 of the SSC CHSl Exam 2019 requires two required skill tests for certain government positions.
Skill Test for Data Entry Operators (DEO)
The Test will last 15 minutes.
Typing Test:
- The Typing Test will take place in English or Hindi. Candidates who apply for the Examination must indicate their preference/option for Skill Test Medium on the Application Form.
- The typing test will be for qualification purposes only.
- It will be administered using a computer provided by the Commission or another authorized agency.
- Candidates who choose the English medium should be able to type at 35 words per minute.
- Candidates who choose Hindi medium must be able to type at least 30 words per minute
- Speed will be judged based on how fast you can type a text passage on the Computer in 10 minutes.
- Candidates with visual impairments (with at least 40% disability) will be permitted 30 minutes.
SSC CHSL Tier-I Exam Analysis 2019
It was easy to moderate. According to a majority, the English section was the easiest. Although the reasoning section was simple, it was a little long. The Quantitative Aptitude section was moderately difficult. The General Awareness section only asked a few current affairs-related questions.
